‘Runaway films’ are still keeping unemployment up
We’re following new jobless figures for the area, where about 9% of hopeful workers can’t find positions.
The leading cause of the region’s stagnant unemployment rates and the decline in its workforce is likely the popularity of “runaway film” productions, projects that motion picture and television studios locate in other states in an effort to cut costs, experts said.
The entertainment industry accounts for a significant portion of jobs in Glendale and Burbank and many job-seekers may have opted to stop looking for work, or to follow the productions to other states, said Jack Kyser, chief economist for the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation.
“Runaway film production is very serious,” Kyser said.”
