July power outages

July 31, 2009

With the summer heat upon us in recent weeks, Glendale Water & Power experienced seven major power outages, according to the utility’s July outage report.

The longest outage, which affected 387 customers, lasted fore more than six hours.

While power outages are never enjoyable, a few of the causes were actually kind of humorous:

  • On July 10, a palm frond came in contact with overhead wires causing a brief morning outage for 418 customers.
  • On July 12, a squirrel came in contact with wires causing a morning outage for more than 6,000 customers.
  • On July 19, a Mylar balloon came in contact with wires, causing an early morning outage for more than 1,000 customers.

Who knew squirrels, palm trees or balloons could wreak havoc?
