Self described ‘gadfly’ accepting money to ‘go away’
I was recently alerted to a contest in this week’s issue of “Vanguard Weekly” run by self-described Glendale City Council gadfly Barry Allen.
Allen is currently accepting $100 checks for his “Go Away Barry” contest, where people can donate $100 for him to “stay” and continue his self-described watchdog activites or can donate $100 to “get out of town.”
From his Web site:
“I get some serious requests to move out of Glendale from time to time. Most recently the request was to move to Miami, Florida no doubt because they have lots of voting issues but my Doctor says the humidity isn’t healthy for me when my lungs have acclimated to Southern California Smog. I discussed the latest request with the Vanguardians Advisors and they suggested that I make it a contest to determine if I should stay or go. Sort of, “Put your money where your mouth is.”
Everyone gets a chance to vote and every vote has to have a minimum of $100 contribution in order to be counted.
Here are the rules: You send your check for $100 to Vanguardians, POB 11202, Glendale 91226 note on your check, on the memo line, either STAY or GO. Checks must be received by August 20, 2009. The August 23 edition of Vanguard will carry the tally. “
Is this “gadfly” offering to sell his silence? What do you think?
