The Glendale Fire Department has reminded residents to “Stay fire smart, don’t get burned,” which is this year’s message for fire prevention week from Oct. 4 to 10.

About 84% of fire deaths are caused by house fires, department officials said.

Here are some tips that the Fire Department provided to residents to remain safe.

  • Never hold a child in your arms while preparing hot food over a stove or drinking a hot beverage.
  • Be careful when using things that get hot such as curling irons, ovens, irons, space heaters and lamps.
  • When using heating pads, use them for 15 to 20 minutes only. Don’t lay, sit or sleep with the pads.
